Current Director

Matt Lebo is a Professor in the Department of Political Science, and previous Department Chair from 2019-2024.

Matt's research focusses on national level politics in the United States -- political parties in Congress, the presidency, and elections. He has written about the strategic decisions political parties must make to balance electoral and legislative goals. He also studies research methodology and time series analysis including micro-targeting and election forecasting. Additional interests are in British politics and Scottish independence.

Founding Director

David Armstrong is a Professor in the Department of Political Science, and Canada Research Chair in in Political Methodology. This is the only political science CRC in Canada focused exclusively on quantitative methodology. As such, Western has a comparative advantage and interest in promoting the study and use of quantitative methodological techniques.

Armstrong specializes in statistics and data analysis. His research spans topics from measurement and latent trait estimation to the role of non-linearity and data mining techniques in statistical models.

Researchers

CCQSS will provide several kinds of opportunities for graduate students:

Opportunities to hear about cutting-edge research in quantitative methodology through the Centre’s Speaker Series.
Opportunities for Research Assistant positions through funded research housed in the Centre. Such research will include both projects undertaken by Faculty Associates, and research funded through institutional collaboration agreements.
Opportunities to publish and disseminate outstanding graduate student work through the Research Papers series.
A graduate student paper award that will encourage and recognize high-quality methodological work being done by Western graduate students.
Opportunities to participate in occasional topical methodological workshops.
Opportunities to make intellectual and interpersonal connections with graduate students and Faculty doing cognate work in other disciplines.

CCQSS will also provide the above opportunities for affiliated post-doctoral fellows. In addition, we will seek external funding for an in-house stipendiary Post-Doctoral Associate in future years.
